Loyal to the Crown: A Palatine German Family in Revolutionary New York
In the early 1700s, thousands of Palatine Germans fled war-torn Europe for the promise of land in New York’s Hudson Valley. When revolution split the colonies decades later, many of these German settlers — bound by ties of patronage, faith, and survival — chose loyalty to the Crown over independence, a decision that cost them everything. The brother of Garry’s 4th great-grandfather fought for the British at the Battle of Saratoga as part of a Palatine German militia. Join Garry for a personal journey through this overlooked history, tracing one Loyalist family’s flight into exile in Canada and a present-day reunion with a long-lost cousin in Bath, Ontario.
Presented by Garry Finkell, treasurer of NY PALAM.
