CAMP SECURITY
The History and Documentation of York County's Revolutionary War Prison Encampment
with co-presenters Jonathan Stayer and June Burk Lloyd

A session in the Pennsylvania Chapter Third Tuesday Zoom programs
Tuesday May 21, 2024 at 7:00 PM EDT
Free and open to all PalAm members.

This program will present extensive original documents and photos of archaeological discoveries to il-lustrate the history and preservation of Camp Security, an encampment established in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1781 to hold British soldiers captured at the battles of Saratoga and Yorktown. It is the only remaining site of a Revolutionary War prison camp in the United States not obliterated by development. Co-presenters Jonathan Stayer and June Burk Lloyd will give particular attention to documentary sources pertaining to both the guards – including the York County militia – and the prisoners.

Retiring after 35 years as reference archivist at the PA State Archives, Jonathan Stayer is president of the South Central Pennsylvania Genealogy Society in York. He has been documenting and speaking about Camp Security for over forty years.

June Burk Lloyd, Librarian Emerita at York County Histo-ry Center, pursued her degrees in History and American Studies because of her deep local roots and love of area history, which she shared through her York Sunday News column and Universal York blog.
